What a $100 Cash Advance Leaves You With on Payday

A $100 cash advance may cover a small expense today, but the real test comes with your next paycheck. Will you still have enough for rent, groceries and other bills after you repay the advance? At BV Cash Advance in Murrieta, we publish an example for $100 in cash. The figures are useful as a starting point for a simple payday calculation.

Start with the amount you actually repay

Our existing fee example shows $100 received and $117.65 owed in total. The difference is a $17.65 finance charge. Before relying on this example, confirm the current offer and due date with our team. Here is the published illustration in three numbers:

Cash received$100.00
Finance charge$17.65
Total repayment$117.65

These figures come from our published loan terms and illustrate the amount received versus the amount owed. The written agreement determines what a customer would actually repay.

The finance charge is the dollar cost; the annual percentage rate (APR) expresses borrowing cost over a year and depends on the actual term. Use the disclosure to compare the dollar fee and annual percentage rate before signing.

Run the next-paycheck calculation first

Start with what will actually reach your account after taxes and deductions. Then subtract expenses due before the following paycheck, not merely the bills you hope to pay. The calculation below is hypothetical, so replace every line with your own figures.

Imagine your next take-home paycheck is $1,200. Housing uses $650, utilities take $120, and food and transportation require $230. Subtract the $117.65 repayment shown in our example. Your remaining cash would be $82.35. The arithmetic looks like this:

$1,200.00 − $650.00 − $120.00 − $230.00 − $117.65 = $82.35 left

That $82.35 still needs to cover anything you omitted, including a prescription or an unexpected travel expense. If the result is negative, the shortfall has shifted into your next pay period. Work backward from the repayment date and include the timing of automatic payments already scheduled.

Why the check can exceed the cash amount

For a California payday transaction based on a personal check, the check can include the amount the customer receives plus the agreed fee. In our $100 illustration, the check amount is $117.65. That does not mean you received $117.65 to spend. You received $100 and would owe the larger amount under the example.

California law limits the face value of a payday-loan check to $300 and the finance charge to 15% of that face value. Notice where the percentage applies: to the check amount, not to the cash in your hand. A $17.65 charge on a $117.65 check is approximately 15%, allowing for rounding. Your signed disclosure determines the actual figures.

If repayment makes next payday too tight

A small negative balance in your calculation is a reason to revisit the plan before borrowing. Ask the company sending the bill whether it can move the due date. You may also be able to reduce the amount of the immediate expense or seek assistance that does not add a repayment obligation.

Before you decide, consider whether the repayment fits regular expenses instead of counting on another loan to cover the gap. California restricts payday lending and does not permit a new payday loan simply to pay off an existing one. We encourage you to discuss the actual fee and due date rather than make a decision based only on the cash available today.
